The Honolulu-based Islanders represent one of the biggest professional sports success stories in Hawaiian history. The team not only produced star players, but also had many notable sportscasters in their history, including Al Michaels, Ken Wilson, Les Keiter, Mel Proctor, and Al Conin. Tony Gwynn, Barry Bonds, and Bobby Valentine played for the team at various times in their careers as well. Unfortunately, travel proved to be difficult with visiting teams playing as many as eight games in a series to avoid making multiple trips. When attendance declined, the team couldn't sustain the costs associated with long travel and they relocated to Colorado.
