The original Michigan Panthers, charter members of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1983, appeared in the first ever professional football game to be broadcast on national cable TV when they took on the Birmingham Stallions on March 7, 1983. The largest USFL crowd on record (60,200) was on hand when the Panthers defeated the Oakland Invaders for the league's Western Division Championship behind the leadership of rookie quarterback Bobby Hebert. The Panthers 1983 USFL Championship was the city of Detroit's first pro football title in 33-years and remains their most recent. In 2022, the name was revived in the new USFL, now the UFL.
