The Vipers were the former Salt Lake City Golden Eagles, established in 1969 in the International Hockey League (IHL). After moving to Detroit in 1994, the were renamed after the Dodge Viper in a sponsorship deal with Chrysler. Early in their history, the team set an IHL attendance record and beat a team of NHL all-stars during the lockout. A later publicity stunt included bringing a 69-year-old Gordie Howe out of retirement for one game. The Vipers were competitive in their early years and capped it off with a 1997 Turner Cup victory.
