About the Kentucky Colonels

The Colonels were the gold standard of ABA franchises. From 1967 to 1976 they posted the league's best all-time winning percentage and reached the Finals three times, winning the 1975 ABA Championship by sweeping the Indiana Pacers. The roster was an embarrassment of frontcourt riches — Hall of Famers Dan Issel and Artis Gilmore in the same paint, with sharpshooter Louie Dampier (the only player to spend all nine ABA seasons in one uniform) at the point.

Hubie Brown coached the championship team to a Coach of the Year nod, and owners John Y. Brown Jr. (later the KFC magnate and governor of Kentucky) and his then-wife Ellie Brown ran the operation with a flair the league couldn't match. Louisville's Freedom Hall regularly drew bigger crowds than half the NBA. When the ABA-NBA merger came in 1976, the Colonels were one of the four teams left out — reportedly because Brown took a $3 million buyout instead of paying the merger fee. The franchise dissolved overnight, but its legacy as the best team the NBA never absorbed has only grown.
