Formed in 1926 when the Vernon Tigers were sold and relocated north, the Missions spent twelve seasons sharing San Francisco with the far more popular Seals — first at Recreation Park, then at Seals Stadium once it opened in 1931. Known early on as the Mission Bells before settling on Reds, the club never matched its crosstown rival at the gate despite competing in the same talent-rich minor league circuit.

Stanford All-American and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Ernie Nevers pitched for the club, and Harry Hooper — a St. Mary's College product finishing out his playing days — remains the only Baseball Hall of Famer to wear a Missions uniform. The franchise relocated to Los Angeles in 1938, becoming the Hollywood Stars.
