The New Jersey Generals played 3 seasons in the USFL from 1983-85. The team was owned by Donald Trump who kept the team in the spotlight with a huge payroll and star players. In addition to the stars it had, the team came close to acquiring Lawrence Taylor, coach Don Shula and going into the 1986 season acquired Jim Kelly through a merger with the Houston Gamblers. Ultimately, the move to playing fall that allowed the Generals to acquire Kelly caused the league to fold and the 1986 season was never played.
