The Peoria Pirates were established in 1999 as a charter member of the first Indoor Football League. In 2001, the club joined  af2, the farm league of the Arena Football League (AFL). In 2005 they left for the United Indoor Football league as the Rough Riders before returning to af2 in 2007 and taking back their old nickname. In 2009, when af2 reformed as the new Arena Football League, the Pirates did not join and instead folded. Â
