The Owls began in Dayton, Ohio, filling the void left by the Dayton Gems. The team would eventually move around the state making homes in Coumbus and Grand Rapids during their time. Their owner, Al Savill, was able to leverage his ownership of the Owls into buying the Pittsburgh Penguins.
