Ownership — Matt Perry, Bill Davidson and Jonathan Fleisig, who had owned other minor-league baseball and hockey clubs — ran a public name-the-team contest, and in April 1998 unveiled the Topeka ScareCrows name, leaning into a Wizard of Oz theme so completely that 50 local elementary students attended the announcement dressed as Munchkins. The club's mascot, Haymaker, and black-red-yellow-white color scheme became one of the most distinctive identities in 1990s minor-pro hockey.
