Their splashy debut signing was Derek Sanderson, the Boston Bruins All-Star who became the highest-paid athlete in any sport when he signed a 10-year, $2.6 million deal with the Blazers. Sanderson promptly suffered a back injury, played just eight games for Philadelphia, and bought out the rest of his contract for a reported $1 million.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Blazers' home opener on October 13, 1972 became a legendary disaster: the brand-new Zamboni cracked the Civic Center ice, the game had to be canceled, and rink workers handed out Blazers pucks to placate the angry crowd — fans threw the pucks back onto the ice, briefly creating a riot.
