Playing at Rupp Arena (the famed home of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program), the Thoroughblades developed San Jose Sharks prospects including Patrick Marleau, Marco Sturm, and others who would become NHL regulars. The team's distinctive horse-themed branding paid tribute to Kentucky's storied thoroughbred horse-racing culture, making the Thoroughblades one of the most visually iconic AHL franchises of the era. After five seasons in Lexington, the franchise relocated to Cleveland for the 2001–2002 season, becoming the Cleveland Barons.
