When the original Montreal Alouettes franchise folded in 1981 due to financial problems, ownership was unwilling to give up the Alouttes name. The result was the Montreal Concordes carrying on football in Quebec. The new team was not well received and attendance struggled. In 1986 the franchise was able to rebrand with the Alouttes name, but it was too late for the franchise. A day before the 1987 season started, the team suddenly folded and players were made available in a dispersion draft.
