The New York Stars were charter members of the World Football League (WFL). They played in the leagueâs first nationally televised game on July 10, 1974, visiting the Jacksonville Sharks. Unable to secure a lease at either Shea Stadium or Yankee Stadium, the team would up playing its home games at Downy Field on Randallâs Island between Manhattan and Brooklyn. After the leagueâs 13th week, the team moved to North Carolina and became, for one game, the Charlotte Stars, after which they were known as the Charlotte Hornets.
